DID YOU KNOW THAT EVERYTHING A CHILD EXPERIENCES AT HOME OR THEIR COMMUNITY, DRIVES THEIR BEHAVIOR?
Silently. Everyday. Children witness dysfunction in their homes, crime and decay in their communities, adult cruelty towards one another, single parent challenges with loneliness, work, bills, child care, food, clothing and overall quality of life. They see this, they're prohibited from talking about it and are expected to function normally. We can help.
DOES YOUR SCHOOL NEED AN ADDITIONAL THERAPIST?
Is your current mental health support staff overwhelmed? Most public schools average one social worker (and maybe a guidance counselor) per 500 children. This means that in urban communities where social determinants of health are at its lowest, e.g.: community decay, violence, poor food choices, dysfunctional households, etc. a school that has 1,000 students, may have 1 social workers and 1 guidance counselor. We can help.
YOUR STAFF ARE HUMAN, THEY HAVE PERSONAL LIFE CHALLNGES TOO.
As a member of an organization's executive team we are trained to think 'policy first' . When one of our subordinate team members has a problem, we often think "That's personal. She's at work. Be a professional. Do the job and deal with personal matters on personal time." However, the same Social Determinants of Life issues that children face, adults face them with 100 times the pressure. Sometimes they just need a shoulder.
REPRESENTATION MATTERS.
This was the very first time that little Chris has ever visited a doctor, and left excited to return. His new doctor looked like him, immediately connected with him and Chris got to ask his new doctor a lot of cool role model questions.
I AM IN TOTAL CONTROL.
Healthcare literacy means being able to clearly understand and explain everything that may have happened to your child, is currently happening to your child or currently happening within your child, because you were taught how.
WE UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU'RE GOING THRU.
Whether one or both parents are employed, raising a family is tough. You want a better life for your children. But, when you consider what your currently going through, how is that possible?
SOMETIMES MOMMY NEEDS A BREAK.
I'm a single mom with a full time job and 2 children with special needs. I've lost touch with most of my girl friends. Every once in a while, I'd like to have some time to myself and not feel guilty about it.
ADVOCATING TO GET EVERYTHING THAT YOU'RE ENTITLED TO.
Did you know that every city has departments within it's government that provide both entitlement and public services that most people don't know exist.
MY SON IS ALWAYS IN HIS ROOM. HE SAYS HE HAS ALOT ON HIS MIND.
Depression comes in many forms. The very moment that you notice something 'a-little-off' about your child, get help. Before it's too late.
OUR CITY IS FILLED WITH SERVICES MOST PEOPLE HAVE NO CLUE EXIST.
Most families have no idea that the State provides 9 services that help children and their families. These are services that can be provided in your home or in a local park, lounge or coffee shop.
A LITTLE HELP GOES A LONG WAY.
My grand daughter seems like she is day-dreaming all the time. I noticed that she isn't playing or doing the little things that kids her age should do. Can we get an assessment or an evaluation to tell us if something is wrong?
DEPRESSION IS NOT SOMETHING YOU CAN JUST 'GET OVER'.
Has something happened to your child that she has never told anyone. Does this feeling make her want to be alone or sleep all of the time? She may be depressed.
EMPOWER YOUR STAFF TO PERFORM AT THEIR HIGHEST LEVEL.
Often times, why we chose our line of education and work is connected to a personal testimony. The fire that burns inside of us drives the passion behind why we do what we do. However, the vehicle of passion needs fuel. Professional development is both the fuel and maintenance that the vehicle of passion needs for the long journey. Empower your staff with the tools to go the distance.
DO YOU KNOW A PARENT OR A CHILD THAT NEEDS A PHYSICAL OR MENTAL HEALTH PRIMARY CARE DOCTOR?
It's crystal clear. More than 50 years of data from almost every globally respected higher educational institution has confirmed two things: (1) People of color have better healthcare outcomes when paired with providers of color, and (2) Black students that have at least one Black teacher are more likely to graduate. At Better Urban Health, we decided to stop ignoring the data.
WE MAKE MENTAL HEALTH COOL.
Social media is cool. My favorite rap artist is cool. My favorite restaurant is cool. My favorite team is cool. The latest style of sneakers is cool and hanging out with my friends is cool. The absolute primary reason why young adults are not open to the idea of mental health care is simple, it's just not cool. We surveyed 100 young adults between the ages of 10-24 asking them "What makes having a doctor or failing to regularly visit a doctor not cool?"
