We Make mental Health Cool.

Mental Health Classes

School-aged youth are a vulnerable population. They are in a period of their lives that is crucial for their mental health development. Children spend more concurrent time in school than anywhere else outside the home. Schools are often challenged to deal with youth mental health, but are seriously under equipped and inadequately supported to handle such an overwhelming responsibility. Health education is a required academic subject for students in all grades. When Better Urban Health is responsible for in-school health classes, students learn mental health self-care, how to care for their bodies, and how to develop and maintain healthy relationships with others. They learn the concepts and skills needed to live healthy lives, including but not limited to:

  • Social and emotional skills
  • How to set goals for life and health
  • How to find and use health services
  • Good communication and relationship skills
  • How to set boundaries and resist negative social pressure

When students participate in Better Urban Health in-school health classes, they receive lessons on:

  • Mental, emotional, and social health, including how to prevent bullying
  • Nutrition and physical activity
  • Personal health and safety
  • Growth, development, and identity
  • Alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use prevention
  • How to prevent disease and illness, including HIV and AIDS
