"I remember this child was very sick. I'll never forget the look on his little face when I came into his room and told him that I was his doctor. His eyes got wide. He said "For real, you're a real doctor?" Until meeting me, he had only seen a black doctor on TV."

- Dr. J. Corey Williams

HEALTHCARE PROVIDERS FOR US ... FROM US

"Many black Americans do not trust their healthcare providers to act in their best interests. Research has shown that blacks are much less likely to report trust in their physicians and hospitals; thus, are less likely to seek treatment or be compliant with recommended treatment plans. The medical community should care about this collective sense of black distrust in medicine, as it is a major factor in the well-documented health disparities between blacks and whites."

-Dr. J. Corey Williams

At Better Urban Health we are addressing this issue by:

  1. Listening to our clients,
  2. Assessing their needs inclusive of their feelings
  3. Mandating diversity in both our internal and external healthcare partnerships,
  4. Placing great emphasis on healthcare literacy and
  5. Partnering with providers of color who believe in honesty and transparency, who are trustworthy, who understand clients needs and most importantly reflect those needs in their practice.
